Carer's Allowance is a benefit for people who spend at least 35 hours a week caring for someone with a disability or health condition.
You can claim online at carersallowance.service.gov.uk, or by post using the Carer's Allowance claim form. You can backdate your claim by up to 3 months.
What the CA claim involves
- The online claim asks for your National Insurance number (and your partner's, if you have one), bank details, employment details and latest payslip if you work, and details of the person you care for.
- For the person you care for you need their date of birth and address, their National Insurance number if they're 16 or over, or their Disability Living Allowance reference if they're under 16.
- You can claim online, by post, or by calling the Carer's Allowance Unit on 0800 731 0297 (Monday–Friday, 8am–6pm).
- If you live in Scotland, you apply for Carer Support Payment instead.

How the Carer's Allowance claim works
- Gather the details: You'll need your National Insurance number, bank details, and details of the person you care for — their date of birth, address and National Insurance number or DLA reference.
- Start the claim: Claim online, by post, or by phone. Tell us which route you're using and send us a photo of the form if it's paper.
- You answer in your language: We translate the questions into Urdu, Punjabi, Polish, Romanian or English. You tell us about your caring role in your own words.
- We complete the form: We type your answers into the official claim form or prepare the online answers for you to enter.
- You review and submit: You check the completed form, sign it if it's paper, and submit. We can also help you backdate the claim if that applies.
